Sustainable revitalization of remote village

The project establishes a collaborative model of village revitalization in Mui Tsz Lam, a village in North District, by involving villagers, professionals, volunteers and CUHK students in a common endeavour. We will co-create village vision and planning with villagers and combining reuse of locally-sourced upcycled materials with experimental fabrications at strategic locations. Our project enables community building with the social impact of multi-way interaction between villagers, professionals, volunteers and students through physical making and social bonding.

This is part of the project ‘Collaborative Conservation: Regenerating Mui Tsz Lam village with Participatory Rebuilding’ led by Prof. Thomas Chung (School of Architecture). The project is supported by the Knowledge Transfer Project Fund (KPF22CHP36).

Project Plum Grove Old House Re-launch

The ‘Project Plum Grove Old House Re-launch,’ organized by School of Architecture of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), was successfully held on 14 September 2024.  This was the first major public event of the Project Plum Grove Phase II, attracting over 180 participants, including villagers, volunteers and guests from various sectors. They gathered to celebrate the restoration of the 360-year-old Hakka Old House in Mui Tsz Lam, Sha Tau Kok. The restored Old House will serve as Mui Tsz Lam’s village community hub, with optimized indoor facilities catering for community needs. Various community-building activities will be organized to promote sustainable revitalization of Mui Tsz Lam Village.

Over the past eighteen months, the second phase project has been dedicated to the restoration of the Old House.  It was inaugurated on the event day of ‘Project Plum Grove Old House Re-launch’, symbolizing the continuation of the heritage and the beginning of a new milestone in rural revitalization.
